CW & Square Mile Corporate Challenge

Lloyd’s end 20-year barren run with CW & Square Mile Corporate Challenge victory

Lloyd’s of London won the St. James’s Place Canary Wharf & Square Mile Corporate event for the first time in over 20 years with a hard fought victory over Morgan Stanley in the final on the Glass Court at the East Wintergarden venue.

It looked to be a different story as Morgan Stanley no.1 Gustav Runersjo leapt to a two game lead over Jim Bristow. However, with both players being members of the Lansdowne Club, Bristow clearly knew that if he could keep his Swedish opponent on the run he may start to tire. This proved to be the case with Bristow gradually pegging things back to close out the first point for Lloyd’s of London.

At two another Lansdowne member in the form of Robbie Maycock was looking to seal the victory, but Morgan Stanley’s Jason Byrne had other ideas. The match ebbed and flowed, with neither player being able to get a grip of proceedings leaving things poised at 2-2 and 8-8 before Maycock was able to finish with a burst and secure victory and the title.

Last on Matt Hazzard, clearly relieved at not being required for a decider, raced through opponent Aizaz Akhtar to complete the victory and a first title since 1998 for Lloyd’s of London.

Earlier in the week there were victories for HSF ‘A’ (Shield), CME (Plate) and JLL (Cup).
