“I was stressed the whole day, playing a match at 8pm isn’t that easy.

“You sit there the whole day worrying about what will happen. I tried not to think about it much and I’m happy I managed to get my mind off the match and do my thinking during the match.

“I’m not the kind of person who goes out in the middle of the tournament, I just grabbed something to eat and had a sleep [to keep his mind off the match].

“He [ElShorbagy] will be very tricky at first and he will be very fast at the beginning. But if I pass the test at the beginning and build up my game then I think I will get through easy.”

El Torkey Seals the win

A big win for El Torkey closes out the day’s action.

The Egyptian held his nerve at match ball up and still managed to play a crosscourt winner despite slipping to seal the win in unorthodox fashion.

Marwan ElShorbagy now stands between El Torkey and a place in the quarters tomorrow – it will be his third appearance in the last eight of a Gold-level event.

We’re into the final match of day three here and an upset could be on the cards as World No.21 Kareem El Torkey edges a tight first game against World No.13 Mohamed Abouelghar.

With the best of three scoring in play, he is just one win away from the quarter-finals here at Ally Pally.

No Mistakes from Gilis

A good day at the office for Belgium’s Tinne Gilis as she wasted no time in putting Hong Kong’s Sin Yuk Chan to the sword in a one-sided battle.

The No.6 seed debuted former World No.5 Sarah-Jane Perry in her coaching corner today and her next round opponent will be defending champ Amina Orfi.

Two contrasting games for Marwan ElShorbagy – he dropped just one point in a masterclass of an opening game.

James posed more of a problem for the World No.9 in the second, but he remained composed to seal the win in straight games.

Orfi completes the comeback

A much improved showing in the end from Orfi, who completes the comeback to book her quarter-finals berth.

Hutton, backed by passionate home fans, threatened the World No.2, but Orfi’s big-game experience came to the fore as she powered her way through the final game to seal the win.

Here’s what the Egyptian had to say:

“It’s the first match [of the season] so I might have had some nerves.

“I haven’t played in a while, but I’m happy to be through. I felt confident I could come back, even when I lost the first game.

“I tried to focus on my game and my strengths more rather than cater to her game because she’s a left-handed player.

“Being World No.1 is [a goal] I have up there. It’s going to come whenever I’m playing well and winning events, so I’m just trying to perform better.”

A good response from the World No.2 as Orfi brings the match back to all square.

Orfi came out aggressively and the accuracy was far higher than what she displayed in the opening game.

For her part, Hutton wasn’t quite as clinical when going in short, and the momentum is now with Orfi heading into the third.

The World No.12 has the reigning World Champion up against the ropes – Hutton has been dominant in the front of the court, taking the pace off the ball and leaving Orfi stranded.

Crouin Advances as Day Three Reaches Midway Point

We’re half way through day three, with No.2 seed Victor Crouin storming into the last eight for the loss of just four points.

Power and control were both on show from the Frenchman, who dominated proceedings at Ally Pally.

Crouin will take on No.7 seed Leonel Cardenas next and had this to say following his win:

“He’s improved a lot over the past two years.

“He’s at his highest ranking and he’s in form, so I knew it would be tougher than the previous encounters. We grew up on the European circuit, it’s always nice to be on court together and it’s always played in a good spirit.

“I tried to celebrate [last season] as much as possible. Two weeks ago I won the European Championships for the fourth time, but I try not to take that, the British players weren’t there and they will be next year because it’s the first qualifying ticket for the Olympics.

“I’ve played that event many times and I tried to celebrate it with my family and loved ones when I got home. Last season was my best on the tour, the best since 2022-23 after graduating from college, then I had a tough period where I went down in the rankings.

“I’m trying to learn from that experience and trying to push this season to beat the top guys more consistently.

“There are so many good players out there and I have to prepare as much as possible to get through. The tour is as dense as it can be these days, so I’m trying to stay humble and keep improving every day.”

2024 Champ Sivasangari Advances

Another win for Sivasangari Subramaniam in London, this time against Nardine Garas.

The Malaysian memorably beat World No.1 Hania El Hammamy, eight-time World Champion Nour ElSherbini and Belgium’s Nele Gilis en route to winning her biggest title at this very venue two years ago.

And she looks a good bet to go deep into the tournament once again following a pair of 11-5 wins.

Next up: Anahat Singh in a match that could be a precursor into what to expect at the Asian Games next month, where squash’s first Olympians will be decided.

Cardenas on Form

Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas became the latest man to book his place in the last eight after getting the better of Colombian veteran Miguel Rodriguez.

Rodriguez pulled out his usual tricks and flicks but a composed showing from Cardenas sees him book his spot in the last eight.

Big Win for Singh

18-year-old Anahat Singh has become the first Indian woman since 2021 to reach the quarter-finals of a PSA Gold-level tournament after a commanding performance saw her upset No.8 seed Nele Gilis.

Gilis reached the final of the London Classic last year, but came up against an in-form Singh, who was crowned World Junior Champion last month.

The crowd at Ally Pally were treated to a series of high-octane rallies, with Singh edging the first game before being being pegged back by a resurgent Gilis.

However, Singh was able to keep her opponent in the back of the court to dominate the ‘T’ and was clinical in the front corners to close out an 13-11, 4-11, 11-8 victory.

Here is what Singh had to say:

“She’s a great player.

“I played her a year and a half ago at the World Teams and that match really helped be get experience for the PSA circuit. It’s always been my dream to play in a venue like this, so it’s very exciting.

“I honestly don’t love it [the best of three format]. You can’t really prepare for it, but I had to be more focused than I would be in a best of five match.

“It’s great here [in London], I’ve been roaming the city a lot. I’ve seen this venue over the years on Instagram, so I’ve been really excited to play here.

“I train with Siva a lot in Prague, so the dynamic is different to playing other opponents.”
