James and El Torkey See Out the day with wins

Day one has come to an end here at Coolhurst as Declan James and Kareem El Torkey score wins over Karim El Hammamy and Matias Knudsen.

James was always in control in his match, while El Torkey came back from a game down to get the win over Knudsen.

Hutton and Chan advance

The final women’s matches of the day saw Jasmine Hutton and Sin Yuk Chan advance after contrasting matches.

Hutton was on form to dispatch Hana Ramadan in straight games, while Chan was forced to battle hard against Nadien Elhammamy, eventually pulling through in the third game.

We have two matches left now as Declan James takes on Karim El Hammamy, while Matias Knudsen takes on Kareem El Torkey.

Hutton had this to say:

“I was mentally switched on, there isn’t that much physicality in best of three, it’s more of a mental game. For me, I had to focus in every rally so she didn’t sneak any quick points.

“It was really good to have the Nationals before this. It’s a big event, it’s not quite PSA, but it’s nice to get that first tournament under my belt so I didn’t feel as edgy.

“I’ll be expecting a really tough match [against Orfi]. I’m expecting her to bring some serious quality, but I’m excited for the challenge.”

Comeback Complete

There were some nervy moments earlier on, but Rodriguez joins Wilhelmi in the last 16.

The Colombian had to draw on his extensive experience to see of a tenacious Irfan, but he will now take on Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas in the next round.

Irfan on Verge of Rodriguez Upset

We could have an upset on the cards here… Pakistan’s Muhammad Ashab Irfan has a 1-0 lead over Colombian veteran Miguel Rodriguez.

There have been some lengthy rallies between the pair in front of a packed house at Coolhurst and it’s the lower-ranked player who has had the edge so far.

Singh & Garas Storm Into Last Eight

Anahat Singh and Nardine Garas become the latest players to earn their spots in the last 16 after a pair of 2-0 wins over Mariam Metwally and Aifa Azman, respectively.

Singh made short work of Metwally as she dropped just a handful of points across both games, while Garas’s win was punctuated by a lengthy injury break after the first game.

Todd is triumphant

Todd completes the comeback to set up a second round meeting with top seed Paul Coll.

It wasn’t a straightforward match for the man from Pontefract, but he held his nerve in the latter stages to earn his spot in the last 16.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I felt a little bit flat in the first game and he came out firing. I wasn’t reading the ball well and I was leaving it in the middle.

“I had to regroup and get some hard rallies into him. Once I got him moving, I was more confident with my length as the match went on.

“I was pleased [with his Nationals performances] until the final, but I didn’t perform my best in the final. I was still getting over that, but I had to put it out of my head coming into this tournament.

“I wish the Nationals wasn’t so close to this tournament, but getting some competitive matches in before my first PSA tournament is a massive thing. I’m back into the routines of tournaments and I’m ready for the season up ahead.”

El Sirty shakes his head as he comes off court, unhappy with some of the calls from the referee. With the scores locked at 7-7 in game two, Todd rattled off four points in a row to bring the match level.

Fresh from a maiden British Nationals final last week, Sam Todd is up against it here against Moustafa El Sirty after going down 11-2 in the opening game.

The lower-ranked Egyptian has been the more accurate of the two so far – can the Yorkshireman rally back?

Hany Targeting top eight ranking after strong start to life in london

Egypt’s World No.13 Salma Hany says she is targeting a spot inside the world’s top eight this season after a commanding triumph over England’s Katie Malliff.

Speaking after her win, Hany said:

“The performance was pretty good, it’s the first match of the season and there are always nerves with the best of three. It was good to get a good match in before getting onto the glass tomorrow.

“Katie is a dangerous performance, she’s been out for a while, so I knew what to expect. I’m pleased I closed that out in two.

“I want to get back to the top eight [this season]. I reached seven in the world and I want to get back to my best ranking.”

Yow Ng Bounces Back After Budapest Beating

Malaysian World No.18 Eain Yow Ng put last week’s disappointing performances at last week’s Budapest Open behind him with a convincing victory over Englishman Patrick Rooney as men’s action got under way at Coolhurst.

The 28-year-old suffered a quarter-final exit to Velavan Senthilkumar in Hungary despite being seeded at No.1, but he looks to have put that setback behind him after a storming win against Rooney in their best-of-three tie.

Here’s what Yow Ng had to say:

“I had to bounce back this week, but I’m happy with how I did after last week’s disappointment. I went in with a clear purpose and was aggressive from the get go.

“I’ve put in so much work and I know what needs to be done, I have to trust that I can get on court and execute what I can. Ranking-wise, I’m trying to get closer to the top 10 guys again, but there is so much quality in the top 25 these days.

“I’m focused on trying to improve my squash and bring myself back to where I know I can play.”
